Jewelry is used as a personal adornment. Though in some instances, it can mean far more than a casual embellishment, it can be symbol of something sublime or an expression of artistry.

Even during early civilization, jewelries have already existed. It is regarded as an enhancer of beauty. Its earliest form consists of beads of shells and was thought to be dated 100,000 years before. Many experts would agree that in most early culture, jewelries were an indication of a social status. People of power or wealth have jewelries that are made from exotic and rare materials. While the usual jewelries are made of natural materials like stones, shells and animal bones or teeth.

The years have seen the refinement and sophistication with which man makes his jewelry. What used to be made of simple stones and bones, are now made of different varieties of gemstones and diamonds. And now, we often associate jewelries as a symbol of love and marriage as demonstrated in the practice of giving engagement and wedding rings.

Diamonds are commonly used in jewelry pieces . It is regarded with very high value especially the very rare and perfectly cut ones. We often see this in engagement and wedding rings although it can be set in any jewelry piece like necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

Gemstones are also widely used in making jewelries. They are highly fashionable. The most common ones are rubies, sapphire, amethyst, emerald and jade, among others. Considered among the most prized of these precious stones are rubies which in Sanskrit mean "king of precious stones".

In terms of finishes, metals like gold, platinum and silver are commonly used. Gold, even in the earliest civilization, has always been a symbol of wealth and stature. Some culture for example, would associate gold as a symbol for kingship or power. Up until today, gold is still regarded as something of very high value. That's why it's very common to see it as a part of a jewelry piece.

The market for jewelries are huge and there seems to be a big demand for it. Many people would pay a very large amount just to beget a very rare and treasured piece. Some find it as a very fascinating artistic expression, while others admire its sheer beauty as exemplified by the many jewelry collectors nowadays.

Whether used as a personal adornment or a symbol of something that's of utmost importance, man has always high regard for beauty. And there's almost none more pronounced than a very good and beautiful jewelry piece.
